Baker-Blumin Family Reunion June 25-28, 2009 Scottsdale, Arizona

Howdy Cousins!

We are now set for our third Baker-Blumin Family Reunion to be held next June 25-28, 2009 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Please mark your calendars! The response from family members to my email communication in May was indeed most encouraging with only one concern expressed about a Scottsdale location (see below). After considering the fine resort properties available to us, the Gainey Suites Hotel has been selected to serve as our “home base” and we will now move ahead to plan a terrific reunion.

About the Gainey Suites Hotel

The Gainey Suites is a top-rated all-suites hotel that will be perfect for families of all sizes and ages. The hotel offers a nice blend of luxury and quality with 162 oversized studio, 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom suites ranging in size from 468 to 833 square feet. Each suite has a full kitchen and spacious living/work area with a pull-out sofa. Our special reunion pricing is $79 to $179 per night, depending on the size and location of the suite. Cribs and roll-away beds are complimentary. Included in this pricing will be an ample Breakfast Buffet (juices, cereals, breads, pastries, eggs, hot/cold beverages) and Evening Hor D’Oeuvre Reception (chips, salsa, hot/cold Hors D’s, tap beer, wine). The hotel has a pool, spa, business center, exercise room and an Enterprise Rent-a-Car office located off the entrance lobby. For additional information, please access the hotel website at www.gaineysuiteshotel.com

The hotel is located on part of the historic Gainey Ranch on East Gainey Suites Drive, just east of Scottsdale Road about one mile south of Shea Boulevard. The Shops Gainey Village, a complex featuring upscale shopping and dining, adjoins the property. A complimentary hotel shuttle is available for transportation within a five mile radius (which includes downtown Scottsdale with its many galleries, western shops, boutiques and places of interest.)

Making hotel reservations

I encourage you to please make your hotel reservations as soon as possible, even if you are uncertain whether you can attend the reunion. To avoid the need for any family member to be financially responsible for a “room block,” the hotel is offering these discounted rates to us based on first-come availability. Family members should make their individual reservations with the hotel’s reservation department at (480) 922-6969 or toll free (800) 970-4666. Ask for the “Baker-Blumin Family Reunion” rates and have the reservations agent explain the different suite sizes and pricing. It is recommended that you call between 8 am and 5 pm, Arizona time, Monday through Friday. Reservations need to be guaranteed with a credit card. Cancellations may be made up to 72 hours prior to arrival without penalty.

Please note that these special reunion rates will not be available for “on-line” bookings or through any website. Guests must call the hotel directly in order to get these special rates. Although Scottsdale has many hotels where family members may participate in “frequent traveler” programs, it is important that we book as many rooms as possible at the Gainey Suites in order for us to get the best possible pricing from the hotel on our catering (food and beverage) and meeting room needs. I plan to make a return trip to the hotel in November to negotiate those catering and other needs and it would be most advantageous if a favorable number of room reservations had already been booked.

About our reunion

In keeping the same Thursday to Sunday format in 2009 as we had during the prior two reunions, we will begin with a welcoming reception, family dinner and meeting on Thursday (June 25); continue with various activities and family dinners on Friday and Saturday (June 26 and 27); and conclude with a breakfast and family meeting on Sunday morning (June 28.) As we start to plan our reunion program we welcome your input and suggestions. Already, several cousins have volunteered to help with hospitality, sports, entertainment and food needs. Please let me hear from you by email, telephone, snail mail, fax, etc. Once we have finalized our overall program and determined a pricing schedule everyone will receive a Registration Form to complete.

With so many historic, interesting and fun things to see and do in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area as well as throughout the entire state of Arizona, families may want to plan vacations around the reunion schedule or arrive early and/or extend their stays. Based on space availability, the Gainey Suites will honor the special reunion pricing to family members who wish to take advantage of this opportunity.

P.S. – The sole concern for a Scottsdale location was about the “summer heat.” While the weather is sure to be warm and sunny, the climate is dry and the humidity is low. The hotel and all venues we’d be using will be fully air conditioned. Keeping hydrated (by drinking water) will be important because you don’t sweat. The bottom line: for what we’ll be doing, the heat should not pose a health problem or create discomfort.
